Three numbers to take first
Measure the width at the hitting spot, the depth along the shot and the lowest ceiling point over the swing. A golfer 5 ft 10 in tall needs a clear ceiling of 8.83 ft at the least and 9.83 ft for a driver. Depths the calculator uses run from 10 ft to 17.64 ft.
- Width: between posts and walls, at the hitting spot.
- Depth: the clear length, without stairs or a furnace room.
- Ceiling: floor to the lowest duct, beam or fixture over the swing zone.
Where a basement loses space
- Ducts, pipes, beams and a drop ceiling can take 6 to 12 inches. Measure to the lowest part over the swing.
- Support posts and furnace or water heater closets cut into the width.
- A low ceiling rules out some monitors for taller golfers. The calculator shows the ceiling verdict for each one.
- A raised floor or mat changes the height at the hitting spot.
What helps
- No weather, and the light is easy to control.
- A finished basement often has a clear rectangle with room for a screen at one end.
Typical size
We have no published source for the typical size of this room type, so we do not quote one. The starting numbers in the calculator below are examples, not claims about your room.
Check your basement
Measure twice, and swing your longest club in the space. The ceiling height guide explains the rule behind the ceiling check, and the launch monitor table lists the space each monitor asks for. Other rooms: garage, basement, spare bedroom.
A guide, not a guarantee
Golf Room Fit is a guide, not a guarantee. Figures are what the maker or a retailer publishes, and we have not tested any product. Measure your room twice, swing a club in the space, and check the maker's own page before you buy.
