The rule

A golf simulator ceiling needs to be your height plus 36 inches at the least, and your height plus 48 inches for a driver. The club head rises about 3 to 4 ft above your head at the top of the swing. Retailers repeat this rule of thumb. Nobody has published a measurement behind it.

Height plus 36 to 48 inches is the ceiling the swing wants.

Rooms with their own ceiling traps: garage, basement and spare bedroom. The monitor table lists the ceiling each launch monitor asks for.

Where sources disagree

Absolute minimum: 8 to 8.5 ft (one guide), 9 ft (several), 8.2 ft/2.5 m (one vendor personal minimum). Recommended: 10 ft (several), 10 to 12 ft (one), 9.35 ft/2.85 m (one vendor). We keep the range, use +36 in as the minimum and +48 in as the recommendation, and let the monitor's own minimum override upward.

One retailer chart lists under 5 ft 6 in at 8.5 to 9 ft, 5 ft 6 in to 6 ft at 9 to 9.5 ft, and over 6 ft at 10 ft or more. We could not confirm who made the chart. It is shown here and not used in the calculator.

How the calculator uses it

  • It takes the larger of the swing rule and the maker or retailer ceiling figure. A maker figure can raise the bar and never lower it.
  • Floor build-up from a mat or platform comes off the ceiling height first. Overhead monitors measure mount height from the hitting area, so a mat matters.
  • For irons only we have no source. The calculator uses the same minimum for both figures and says so in the notes.
  • An overhead monitor with a stated mount range gets a drop bracket note when the ceiling is above it. That is a note, not a failure.

Check it in the room

Take your longest club and make a full swing in the space. If it feels restricted, the ceiling is too low. Also leave 6 to 12 in above the highest swing point (one source, GCQuad context).

Sloped, joisted and beamed ceilings: use the lowest point over the swing zone, and remember that fans, lights and garage door tracks count.
